** SOLD ** Vintage Deutsche Werke Ortgies Semi-Auto .32 ACP Pistol w/ Famous "Fitz Special" Modification (Sold as DISPLAY/PARTS ONLY!)
Description: Here we have a German-made Ortgies semi-automatic pistol chambered in .32 auto caliber. The Ortgies 7.65 mm pistol was a hammerless semi-automatic pistol that was produced in Germany in the years immediately after World War I, first by its inventor Heinrich Ortgies and then by Deutsche Werke. Inexpensive, but of good quality, the pistol achieved considerable success at contemporary shooting competitions and, as an export product, was popular throughout the Americas. This particular example is in good working condition, but we are offering this pistol on a PARTS-ONLY or DISPLAY basis. We are NOT selling this as a functional gun because of the Fitz Special modification. We do not recommend that the next owner carry this gun nor can we reccomend that they shoot it. The pistol has some high edge wear and a few spots in the finish but is very handsome overall. The wood grip panels have some pressure spots but are free of cracks or chips. The 3 1/2 inch barrel has a good bore. The "Fitz Special" modification was made famous by the the N.Y. State Trooper and firearms instructor John Fitzgerald in the 1930's. He wrote the premier book of that time period on shooting techniques and developed some gun modifications to make defending one's self faster and easier. The cut-away trigger guard enabled the user to get the gun out of it's concealed position in the user's pocket or waistband quickly, and do so with the trigger finger already in place and ready to fire as soon as the gun is on-target. This also made the gun much easier to use with gloves on, which was a very common thing in the northern U.S. cities where the winters are long. It ended up being a popular modification for advanced and experienced shooters, with Elmer Keith and Col. Atkins among the many well-known gun owners that had "Fitz Special" modified carry guns. While the Fitz Special modification remained popular for quite some time, ultimately the greatly-increased likliehood of an accidental discharge would make the modification less and less popular as gun design evolved.
