Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Very Rare & Fine Massive James Wilkinson & Son, London, England Flintlock Double Barrel Officer's Howdah Pistol Identified to the 1st Light Cavalry with Factory Letter, .65 cal smoothbore, mfg. 1820. This is a wildly impressive pistol that must be held to be truly appreciated. Factory records indicate serial number 1445 was completed in March of 1820 and purchased by Bazet, Farquhar (Crawford) & Co. as part of a 16 gun order of identical double barrel pistols. Bazett, Farquhar, Crawford & Co existed between 1816-1828 and held office at 71 Old Broad St. in London. They were East India agents and merchants actively shipping goods to Calcutta and Bombay. The pistol was retailed to an officer of the 1st Light Cavalry (likely the Madras or Bengal Natives) for the purpose of self defense against tigers and other dangerous game that might have been encountered while serving under the British Crown in India. It is a substantial piece weighing 3 lbs 3 oz and measuring 13 5/8" long overall. The 7 1/2" long Damascus barrels feature a double gold banded breech with platinum blow plugs and a bead front sight. The upper rib is inscribed "JAs WILKINSON & SON LONDON GUN MAKERS To His MAJESTY". The locks are of superb quality inside and out and feature roller frizzens with gold lined pans and sliding safeties. Both are marked "JAs WILKINSON / & SON" and remain in their original flintlock form with original components except for the left cock which is a replacement (retaining the original top jaw). Serial number "1445" is stamped under the barrels and inscribed inside both locks with partial number "45" engraved on the frizzens. The barrels have a light plum/gray patina with vivid Damascus pattern remaining while the locks and tang show mottled case color faded to silver. The gun is beautifully engraved throughout. The stock is nicely figured and features a finely checkered wrist retaining a beautifully untouched finish throughout. Aside from two small old chips along the left edge of the forestock the wood remains excellent overall with no cracks or repairs. Brass buttcap, triggerguard, ramrod entry pipe, and wedge escutcheons all have an attractive dark mustard color. The buttcap is inscribed "1st / L C" above the owner's initials which I can not positively decipher. The inscription is very worn and difficult to read however further research should be done to possibly identify the officer who carried this pistol. Original military style swivel ramrod as specified in the factory ledger. Both actions are perfectly crisp and function flawlessly featuring internal and external (sliding) safeties. The frizzens both snap shut and spring forward with remarkable force as if they were new. Very good bores with smooth bright surfaces and minor blackpowder frosting. A factory letter is included along with a scan of the original Wilkinson records. Howdah pistols of this age, quality, and size are rarely encountered - let alone examples that can be documented to India with military ownership! An outstanding centerpiece for any collection.
