1930s DWM LUGER PISTOL WEIMAR 7.65x21mm Gangster Kingston NY Versailles C&R BOOTLEGGER JACK “LEGS” DIAMOND Favorite
Description: 1930s DWM LUGER PISTOL WEIMAR 7.65x21mm Gangster Kingston NY Versailles C&R BOOTLEGGER JACK “LEGS” DIAMOND Favorite Here we present a C&R German DWM (Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken) Pistole Parabellum P.08 Luger Pistol, made circa the early 1930s in Berlin. This pistol was made for export to the American market as the “GERMANY” marking indicates. The US then as now was a huge market for firearms of all kinds. During this Great Depression period of the interwar years, along with Prohibition, organized crime, and folk hero robbers and the like, many people wished to arm themselves, not least of which were the gangsters! Jack “Legs” Diamond was an Irish-American gangster and bootlegger out of Philadelphia known to favor just this sort of Luger pistol in .30 (7.65mm)! During the interwar period between World War I and World War II, most lugers were chambered in 7.65mm, as is this example. The reason for this is that immediately after World War I the German government was forced under the Treaty of Versailles to dispose of their 9mm pistols, so they re-barreled them in the smaller 7.65mm parabellum and large numbers were sold off commercially and to foreign governments. Also, manufacturers such as DWM weren’t allowed to produce 9mm weapons, thus the smaller 7.65mm chambering. Although, as Germany neared World War II in the late 1930s, they weren’t paying much attention to the Treaty of Versailles anymore. That’s when DWM began chambering their pistols back in the larger 9mm cartridge. The “Crown over N” proof mark is marked on this pistol. The Crown over N is a German pre-World War II proof mark used before April 1, 1940. The “N” indicates that the gun has been proofed with “nitro” or smokeless powder. The top of the toggle is marked “DWM”, and “GERMANY” marked frame. The overall condition is very good. Numbers match except magazines. Excellent action. Bright and nicely rifled bore. Sharp markings. Both grips are in good shape with light handling. Comes with a total of 3 magazines. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 4-3/4 inches.
