CASED Brace of DUELING PISTOLS by MANTON/REYNOLDS .56 Percussion Antique
English Pistols Made for the French Market!
Description: CASED Brace of DUELING PISTOLS by MANTON/REYNOLDS .56 Percussion Antique English Pistols Made for the French Market! Here we present a Pair of Cased Joseph Manton & Reynolds Dueling Pistols, made circa the early 1800s in England. The barrels are stamped “REGLE/PAR/J.C. KASTLI/A/PARIS” in addition to the original marking “LATE FROM JOSH MANTON LONDON”. The breech plugs and locks have “REYNOLDS” markings. Joseph Manton is considered to have been one of the best English gunmakers, not just for quality but for innovation. From 1780-1781, Manton was first apprenticed to a gunmaker in Grantham, Newton. From 1781 onward, he worked on his own producing around 100 weapons annually, including both cased dueling pistols, such as these, and shotguns. The association between Manton and Reynolds is not clear, but it has been posited that Reynolds may have been an apprentice or employee of Manton at the end of the latter’s career, or perhaps he acquired Manton’s new-old stock. Regardless, these barrels and locks were updated from flintlock to percussion. The style and décor of the stocks confirm the fact that they were bound for the French market. The scale-like texturing of the grips is a unique touch. These come in a fitted, green velvet-lined case with the initials “FS” inscribed on the lid’s placard. The overall condition of both pistols is good+. Excellent actions with excellent triggers. Both bores show use and have good rifling. Solid stocks, although one pistol contains a thin crack on the heel where it was repaired. The case has a large crack across the top of the lid (stable) and shows its age overall. The accoutrements are in good shape. The ramrod/ball starter doubles as a powder measure and has an externally adjustable brass elevator with number graduations. A handsome set of pistols that made their way from England to France to the United States. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 9 inches. Caliber: .56 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
