N. Curry & Bro. San Francisco California Agent Marked Henry Deringer Philadelphia Derringer Wild West Gambler Pocket Pistol *RARE*
Description: *SOLD* Rare & Desirable N. Curry & Bro. San Francisco, California Agent Marked Henry Deringer "Philadlephia Derringer" Percussion Pocket Pistol, .40 Cal, mfg. circa 1860's. This is a fantastic example of a genuine Philadelphia Derringer which was originally retailed in California just as the Wild West era was kicking off. Dealer Charles Curry of San Francisco was perhaps the largest West Coast agent for Henry Deringer's famous pocket pistols and upon his death in 1863 the company was handed over to his brothers Nathaniel and John (N. Curry & Bro) who continued until 1882. The pistol is just about the size of the derringer that killed President Lincoln measuring 5 5/8" long overall with a 2 1/2" double platinum banded barrel. It is fitted with a sighted breech and very neatly filed dovetailed German silver blade front sight. The engraved lock is stamped "DERINGER / PHILADELA" with this marking repeated over the breech and "N. CURRY & BRo. / SAN FRANCo CALa / AGENTS" stamped on the top flat of the barrel. The metal has a smooth plum patina drifting to dark gray with sharp edges and markings. The stock features a checkered grip and retains an attractive worn appearance with much original varnish remaining. There is a very tight old crack ahead of the wedge escutcheon on either side and a tight secure old crack running between the tip of the lock around to the left side of the trigger. Finely engraved German silver shield escutcheon, sideplate, triggerguard, wedge escutcheon, muzzle inlay, and buttcap with nipple compartment. The action is very crisp and functions flawlessly. Clean original nipple. Fair bore with lightly worn seven-groove rifling. Authentic Philadlephia Derringers, and especially those with retailer markings, are always in high demand as they represent an iconic piece of American Civil War and Wild West history.
