Colt-King’s Woodsman First Series Target Model .22 Long Rifle Automatic Pistol
Description: This Listing from a Family Collection of Shooting Sports Enthusiasts is a Used First Series Target Model 6-5/8 Inch Barrel -- Not the Shorter 4-1/2 Inch Sport Model; SN 84,9XX on the Frontstrap; Circa 1932 according to Wilson and: <://colt/serial-lookup/> Colt .22 Long Rifle Auto Pistol marked “THE WOODSMAN” on the Left Side of the Frame; the Left Side of the Slide is marked on staggered lines “COLT // AUTOMATIC / CAL. .22 LONG RIFLE” with the Rampant Colt Trademark immediately behind the lettering; Bottom of the 10-Round Magazine is marked on two lines “COLT WOODSMAN / CAL. .22 L.R.” with the Magazine Release located at the Bottom-Rear of the Grip Frame. Two aftermarket magazines are included. Barrel Markings on the Top are in Two Lines “COLT’S PT. FA. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. / PAT’D DEC. 22, 1903. AUG. 27, 1918. SEPT. 3, 1918.” Early Woodsman Models were made to handle Standard Velocity .22 LR ammunition - with High Velocity .22 compatibility phased in and complete by approximately SN 85,000. It is likely, but we cannot be certain, that this example was made to handle High Velocity ammunition (SN is single-digits short of 85,000). This example carries an Adjustable Barrel-Weight Tube under the Full Length of the Barrel, ahead of the frame (marked “KING / PAT PEND” in two lines on the Access Screw) by King’s Gun Sight Company of San Francisco. The Backstrap/Mainspring Housing is Lightly Border-Checkered in a Small Oval where theof a shooter’s hand would go. The 6-5/8 Inch Barrel is Slightly Tapered and has the Elevation-Adjustable Front Blade (Partridge-Style) Sight found on the Target Model, and on only a minority of First Series Sport Pistols. A Windage Screw-Adjustable and Line-Indexed Rear Sight sits atop the back end of the Slide – which carries Vertical Serrations. Safety-Slide Hold-Back/Release is on the Left Side. The Slide does Not Remain Open on these models after firing the last round. The Pistol is in Good Working Order and recently was test-fired. The bore is bright with preserved rifling. At more than 90 years old, the pistol shows very little wear for age – with a few nicks and a little bit of bluing wear at the muzzle, and tool marks on the King’s Barrel-Weight Tube Access Screw. Not being dealers or experts, we can see only a small amount of other bluing-finish wear that could make this pistol 90-95 Percent (or better) Modern Condition. The Oak-Leaf-Embossed, Brown Plastic, Thumbrest Target Grips cover the Bottom Portion of the Backstrap and extend Below the Bottom of the Grip Frame with markings on four lines inside the left panel: 'THE POINTER' / BY W. MURAD / SAN CARLOS, CALIF. / NO. 101.
