Colt Model 1873 Frontier Six Shooter Mfg 1898 w/Documented Historical Significance
Description: Here is a fine example of a First Generation Colt Single Action Model 1873 Revolver "Frontier Six Shooter" and so stamped on the left side of the barrel. In caliber 44-40 and with a 4 3/4" barrel. The Colt Frontier Six Shooter was Colt's 1873 Model P type revolver manufactured in 44-40 Winchester Caliber instead of the .45 Colt (in which configuration it was called The Single Action Army) so as to be compatible with the Winchester Model 73 ammunition. Production began in 1877. The Colt Frontier Six Shooter was the actual name of the Colt pistol model and this was acid-etched on the left side of the barrel. After 1889, the legend was roll-stamped until 1919, when the caliber designation 44-40 was added. Users of the 44-40 Winchester cartridge in the far west appreciated the convenience of being able to carry a single caliber of ammunition which they could fire in both their rifle and revolver. The Colt Frontier Six-Shooter Revolver and the Winchester Model 1892 in 44-40 WCF caliber were one of the most common cobinations seen in the old west. The serial number of this revolver is 181015. According to "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver" by Graham, Kopec & Moore, page 124, "Colt's historical information letters accompanying several Single Actions from this range (serial nos 165000-192000) again give the Western romanticist food for thought. An order of three Frontier 44-40's was sold to E.J Post & Co., Albuquerque, but shipped to Winchester Arms in New Haven, no doubt to be paired with Winchester long guns also headed to the vast expanses of New Mexico." What makes this gun unique is that it to was sold to directly to Winchester Repeating Arms in New Haven, Ct and Shipped to E.J Post and Company, Albuquerque, Territory of New Mexico on November 12, 1898. This is one of the two guns, purchased by Winchester, and included in that shipment. E. J Post was an exporter for Colt & Winchester to Mexico and the Americas and up until 1895 only received 469 Revolvers compared to the more commonly seen Simmons Hardware Company who received 19,532 Revolvers during the same period. For this example, everything appears to be original. Bore is good. No remaining finish. Smooth finish for the most part with some light pitting.Grips are great. No chips or cracks. All stamps and markings very legible. Strong Hartford address. Good mechanics. Smooth as butter action. Gun functions properly. Photos tell all. A great example with some documented historic significance. Colt Archive Properties Letter included. Purchaser must be at least 21 years of age and must include a valid state issued driver's license with payment. This is an antique firearm. No FFL required. Payment must be received in 7 days or item is subject to being relisted. CC accepted with 2.5% fee. Personal checks ok but must clear prior to shipping. $25 shipping.
