Colt Model 1903 General Officer’s Pistol Issued to Two Army Generals
Description: Serial #568434, .32 ACP, 3 3/4 inch barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a 1943-made pistol that has retained 95-97% of the original, wartime parkerized finish with some fading, traces of freckling within the slide serrations, and mild silvering along the edges and projections. The checkered, walnut Colt medallion grips are in fine-excellent shape, with sharp checkering points, and minor wear. The pistol comes with three magazines, and is in about excellent condition overall. According to the general Officer’s Pistol roster in “The Colt Pocket Hammerless Automatic Pistols" by John W. Brunner (1996), this pistol was first issued to Brig. Gen. Edward S. Brannigan Jr., and then then reissued to Maj. Gen. Harry J. Rockafeller. Edward S. Branigan Jr. was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery, NY National Guard in 1934, entering active duty in February of 1941. Throughout World War 2 he was a Battalion CO, 258th FA Regiment; S3 and XO, 71st FA Brigade; XO 258th FA Regiment; Asst. FA Officer, Airborne Command; and CO, 464th Parachute FA Battalion before being released from active duty in December of 1945. He then entered reserve status, serving as Group Commander, 413th and 414th Artillery Groups; Deputy Brigade Commander, 77th Infantry Division; CO of the 300th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade.; and ended his military career as the Commanding General, 301st Logistical Command. He became an executive at Met Life after leaving the Army, and passed away in 1993. The pistol was subsequently issued to Major General Harry J. Rockafeller, who served in the 4th Armored Division under Patton in World War 2, and was present during the relief of the besieged 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne. General Rockafeller was issued the pistol in June of 1967, and returned it to the Army upon his retirement. Following his retirement he lived in Wall Township, NJ, where he befriended officers in the local police department, and who were instrumental in raising the funds to erect a stirring memorial to General Rockafeller after he passed away in 2017. This is a fantastic example of a double-issued, and identified, General Officer’s pistol, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Both digital photos in the listing are of MG Rockafeller and his the statue erected to honor his incredible service.
