U.S. Civil War Colt 1849 Pocket Model Revolver in .31 Caliber Cap & Ball
* All-Original & Matching 1861 Example in Perfect Working Order *SOLD*
Description: This is a very nice all-original and all-matching U.S. Civil War 1861-production Colt 1849 Pocket Model revolver in .31 caliber with a scarce iron frame. This handsome Pocket Model has a 4" inch barrel and is in very good fully-functional condition, retaining a clearly visible cylinder scene in full, and all of the factory markings in excellent condition. All of the edges and corners on this gun are still sharp, and all of the parts and screws are factory original and in good condition. The factory blue finish on the barrel and cylinder show an aged brown-blue patina, while the factory case-colored frame, loading lever, and hammer are mostly brown but still show traces of color, particularly on the flats of the frame below the recoil shield. The factory blued trigger still shows some nice original blue on the face while the sides and rear of the trigger have browned. The silver-plated iron grip frame and trigger guard on this gun make it a scarcer variation of the Pocket Model, as the vast majority of 1849 Pocket Models had a silver-plated brass grip frame and triggerguard. There is a lot of the original factory silver plating still on this gun, although most of it is hidden by tarnish. You can see some of the exposed silver plate on the bottom of the butt and on the sides of the grip frame on either side of the hammer. As mentioned earlier, all of the numbered parts on this Colt are original factory-stamped and matching including the barrel, cylinder, cylinder spindle, frame, triggerguard, grip frame, loading lever, and barrel wedge. There is no doubt that the 1-piece grip is numbered to this gun as well due to the perfect fit and matching patina, however we are not going to take it apart and disturb the perfect fitment of the grip to the grip frame and gun. The grip looks like it has never been out of this gun since it was installed at the Colt factory, we are not going to be the first. The bore in this Pocket Model is in good condition overall, showing light pitting throughout but well-defined rifling and no major damage. The 5 chambers of the cylinder are also in good condition overall, showing light pitting but no major damage and the nipple passages are all still clear. Both barrel-locating pins are still intact on front of the frame, and the frame-to-barrel fitment is excellent. As mentioned earlier, this Colt is in perfect working order with excellent mechanics. The action is still "in time" and the cylinder lock-up is excellent. The hammer still has both the half-cock and full-cock notches intact, and the trigger breaks nicely with a light pull. All in all, this is a superb example of an all-original Civil War-production iron-framed Colt Pocket Model. It is particularly special in that it has such a superb cylinder scene and excellent factory markings to go along with excellent mechanics. If you have been looking for a investment-worthy Colt Pocket Model for your collection this 1861 iron-frame example would be an excellent choice.
