Published Civil War Confederate Gunsmith Assembled Virginia Manufactory 2nd Model Percussion Conversion Belt Pistol
Description: Very Rare Published Civil War Confederate Gunsmith Assembled Virginia Manufactory 2nd Model Percussion Conversion Belt Pistol from the William Albaugh Collection, .60 cal smoothbore, mfg. 1813 / rebuilt circa 1861. This is a really neat Confederate associated pistol which was featured on page 39 of the 1957 book "Confederate Arms" by William A. Albaugh III & Edward N. Simmons. The pistol was part of William Albaugh's personal collection. Albaugh described the pistol as "Single-shot percussion pistol made from Virginia Manufactory parts...The pistol was probably made up by some gunsmith at the start of the war to help the Confederacy". A Second Model Virginia Manufactory pistol also dated 1813 in it's original configuration is pictured above and a First Model is shown on the previous page. This pistol being rebuilt and converted to percussion would suggest Confederate usage more than any example found today in original flintlock form. It is also worth noting that in the gun's previous life it assuredly saw service during The War of 1812 in which Virginia troops were heavily involved. The pistol measures 15 1/4" long and retains it's original 10" Virginia Manufactory barrel which now measures closer to .60 caliber than it's original .54. The lock is faintly marked "VIRGINIA" with "RICHMOND / 1813" at the tail. Number "666" is stamped inside the triggerguard bow. The metal has a smooth silvery/gray patina overall. The stock is very well made and features a wide bag-shaped handle which is quite comfortable in hand. The wood retains a pleasing smooth finish with a lovely untouched patina throughout. There is a distinct 3" chip at the right forward edge near the muzzle which is clearly visible in the book. Further there is a slightly shorter chip along the left edge at the muzzle and a secure old crack just above and below the rear lock screw. Brass triggerguard and ramrod thimble both have a nice dark untouched color. Original wood ramrod. The action is perfectly crisp and functions flawlessly. Original nipple is somewhat short but would still hold a cap. The book is included along with a 1991 bill of sale from legendary relic trader Rex Arrowsmith. A fantastic piece of American history with great provenance. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
