The Canik pistol has certainly gained a hold in the US market and rightly so. Its various models are becoming increasingly popular as more and more people try out this excellent pistol. The SFx Rival is one of the newer iterations, the example shown here being the Rival-S Dark Side model. The Rival-S differs not only from the regular Rival, but all other TP9/Mete derivatives in that it has a steel frame. The intended purpose is to increase the overall weight of the pistol. This may sound strange in the modern era. But it does serve a purpose. In competition shooting, a heavier pistol means less recoil, leading to improved accuracy. Another benefit of the steel frame is that it is physically stronger than a polymer frame. The tradeoff is that it is susceptible to rust over time if cleaning is not performed on a regular basis. Of course, keeping the pistol stored in a properly controlled environment reduces the frequency between cleaning sessions significantly. As the Mete SFx was specifically designed to be superior to the TP9 SFx, the SFx Rival-S is designed to be a further improvement on the Mete SFx. It is slightly shorter in overall length than the Mete SFx to allow the Rival to compete in IDPA, IPSC, and USPSA competition without restrictions. It is of course, suitable for 3-gun competition as well. The Rival-S features a match-grade 5-inch-long barrel, a low-profile ambidextrous slide stop, adjustable rear sight, and fiber optic front sight. The slide has lightening cutouts to keep the balance of the pistol close to the standard full-size TP9/Mete models. The grip features an integral flared-mag-well although this pistol comes with an optional Speed flared adaptor which fits over the original mag-well flare. The grip features an integral flared-mag-well although this pistol comes with an optional Speed flared adaptor which fits over the original mag-well flare. The Rival-S has a special, lightened 90 degree cut aluminum flat trigger which a short, crisp trigger pull right out of the box thanks to its nickel-coated action components. As with the TP9 and Mete, the Rival’s frame is equipped with a 1913 picatinny under-barrel rail. The magazine catch is reversible for left-hand shooters. One major improvement over the TP9 SFx, and which the Rival-S shares with the Mete pistol, is the internal changes made to the pistol to allow for easier disassembly. These begin with the easy-in-easy-out push pins which can be removed using a little pressure from a punch (see accessories below). Once these are removed, the internal parts are arranged to be modular enough that a complete disassembly and reassembly of the pistol is possible just using the punch. The SFx Rival-S comes with a very high number of accessories compared to most name brand pistols such as Smith & Wesson, Ruger, Glock, and H&K. First and foremost are no less than 5 mounting plates that fit the full range of red dot sights made for pistol competitions by Trijicon, Leupold, Vortex, Burris and others. Also included as accessories are two spare backstraps for the grip, a “custom” (factory) holster, Canik punch and tool kit, cleaning tools, two 18-round magazines each with an alternate aluminum floor plate, a magazine loading tool, 2 alternate magazine release buttons, and 2 spare fiber optic rods (one red, one green). Also included is a charging handle that can be threaded into 4 of the five optic plates. Each plate is threaded on both sides so that the charging handle can be placed to accommodate left or right-handed shooters. The fifth optic plate includes an integral fixed rear sight for those who wish to have the ability to co-witness with a red dot sight. The holster allows the Rival-S to be holstered with a red dot mounted. The tool kit is neatly shaped like a miniature Canik pistol. It not only houses the tools and screws, but it also houses the two spare mag release buttons, the charging handle, and the spare fiber optic rods as well. Finally, unlike other Canik pistols, the Rival-S comes inside a large, water resistant Tier 2 travel case. This pistol is brand new and remains unfired outside of factory testing. The Canik pistol has certainly gained a hold in the US market and rightly so. Its various models are becoming increasingly popular as more and more people try out this excellent pistol. The SFx Rival is one of the newer iterations, the example shown here being the Rival-S Dark Side model. The Rival-S differs not only from the regular Rival, but all other TP9/Mete derivatives in that it has a steel frame. The intended purpose is to increase the overall weight of the pistol. This may sound strange in the modern era. But it does serve a purpose. In competition shooting, a heavier pistol means less recoil, leading to improved accuracy. Another benefit of the steel frame is that it is physically stronger than a polymer frame. The tradeoff is that it is susceptible to rust over time if cleaning is not performed on a regular basis. Of course, keeping the pistol stored in a properly controlled environment reduces the frequency between cleaning sessions significantly. As the Mete SFx was specifically designed to be superior to the TP9 SFx, the SFx Rival-S is designed to be a further improvement on the Mete SFx. It is slightly shorter in overall length than the Mete SFx to allow the Rival to compete in IDPA, IPSC, and USPSA competition without restrictions. It is of course, suitable for 3-gun competition as well. The Rival-S features a match-grade 5-inch-long barrel, a low-profile ambidextrous slide stop, adjustable rear sight, and fiber optic front sight. The slide has lightening cutouts to keep the balance of the pistol close to the standard full-size TP9/Mete models.
