Webley Wedge Frame Revolver Rare Cased Silver Plated
Description:
NSN, .44 caliber percussion, 5 1/4” octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a very small amount of minor freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome revolver that retains about 85-90% of its original silver plated finish that has bubbled lightly on a few areas of the frame and barrel as well as some mild flaking along the circumference of the cylinder. The underlying metal has a slightly dark plum-gray patina where exposed and the silver, which was polished at one point, has begun to reacquire a pleasant bluish purple patina behind the recoil shield and along the barrel. The topstrap is marked “CHAs. OSBORNE”, and simple double line borders are engraved along the edges of the frame and at the muzzle and traces of muted color case-hardening are still present on the Kerr-type rammer. The barrel wedge and screwheads retain some of their original bright fire blue to varying degrees and the finely checkered walnut grips are in excellent condition with only some minor flattening of the points on either panel. The revolver is housed in an original oaken case with green baize-lined six compartment interior along with: a single cavity brass mold marked "54" and "W D" casting a round nose bullet with single groove, a 6 13/16" ramrod with dished brass tip concealing a worm ball puller, a pistol size bag flask with no name similar to Riling No. 200, a small turn screw, a square nipple wrench with a cracked handle, a small round pewter oil bottle, a lacquered tin containing a few Eley Bros. No. 10 caps, and the key. These wedge frame guns were made for a short time only (1857-1859) when they were superseded by the solid frame models. This particular gun is very similar to that shown in figure 11-37 on page 38 of "Webley Revolvers" by Gordon Bruce and Christian Reinhardt. Nigel Brown lists a Charles Osborne (est. 1838) as a gun and rifle maker operating at 1 Litchfield St. in Birmingham. Most of the revolvers of the era were blued with some others in nickel (generally marketed towards officers or gentlemen residing in tropical climes).
