Description: Late 1700s / Early 1800s Antique KETLAND & CO. PERCUSSION Conversion Pistol PRE-1813 PROOFS Turn of the Century Officer’s Pistol Here we present an antique Ketland & Co. marked Percussion Conversion Pistol, made circa the late 1700s to early 1800s in turn of the century England. This example would have started out life as a flintlock and converted when the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced. Thomas Ketland & Co. was a firearms manufacturer founded in Birmingham, England somewhere around 1760. Thomas Ketland Sr. was a highly successful Birmingham gunmaker who went on to become one of the most prominent and active British makers of the day. After he started his business around 1760 and expanded into the export market around 1790. He died in 1816. The business carried on until bankruptcy in 1821. The company primarily manufactured flintlock pistols, becoming quite successful in its field. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. The barrel, trigger, lock, barrel tang, hammer, frizzen, pan and spring are iron, and the remaining parts are brass. This pistol would have possibly belonged to a military officer during this period. The barrel is round with a beautiful full-length walnut stock, and the engravings on the brass are reserved yet handsome. If only this gun could tell us some stories. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape considering its age. Solid stock, contains some chipping and scuffs. Markings are legible. Finish on the barrel has matured to a smooth brown patina. A thin grain split is present on the left stock flat. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 7-7/8 inches.
