Here we present an antique Spanish Gastelu Percussion Belt Pistol, made circa 1865 in Eibar, Spain. This type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and well into the 19th Centuries in Europe, as well as in the United States. They were of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside.

This mid-sized self-defense pistol would have been most at home tucked into one’s belt or in the coat pocket of anyone in a busy city like Madrid or Barcelona during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. As mentioned, this was of course made primarily for self-defense, and very well would tell stories if it could. Much happened across Europe and abroad during this period. Its gaping .70 caliber “manstopping” bore would have been quite the shock for the ne’er do wells roaming the big city streets.

The overall condition is very good. Some original finish is present on the barrel. Strong action. Good bore. The stock has a thin crack on the left flat, of which is stable. Nice checkering on the grip. Markings are legible. Some iron components are lightly engraved. “EN EIBAR/POR GASTELU/ANO 1865” is silver inlaid atop the barrel. The ramrod is a replacement wood dowel.
