1850s LONG BARRELED Antique JOSIAH PHILIPS Percussion Pistol “BUGGY RIFLE”
.40 Caliber Sidehammer “SUNDAY GO TO MEETING” Rifle
Description: 1850s LONG BARRELED Antique JOSIAH PHILIPS Percussion Pistol “BUGGY RIFLE” .40 Caliber Sidehammer “SUNDAY GO TO MEETING” Rifle Here we present an antique Josiah Philips Percussion “Buggy Rifle” Pistol, made circa the 1850s. Normally, “buggy rifles” were short muzzleloaders that would fit under a buggy seat. The origination of the term varies, but many claim that since you could not work or do business on the sabbath, the men would have shooting matches after the church services. Thus, a “buggy rifle” was kept under the buggy seat. It was also said that they couldn’t have horse races on Sundays, but occasionally two buggies would have “simultaneous runaways” as they were leaving church. This type of single shot percussion pistol would have also been used for self-defense against both man and beast and would have made a formidable weapon after that single shot was expended. The overall condition is very good. Original finish. The action is strong. The bore is dim with thin rifling. The grips show use and remain solid. The frame shows where the detachable stock would mount but this one does not come with the stock. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 11-3/4 inches. Caliber: .40 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
