Description: ORNATE METALWORK Antique FLINT SNAPHAUNCE Belt/Holster Pistol Early 17th Century SNAPHAUNCE FLINTLOCK Pistol Here we present an antique Snaphaunce Belt Pistol. This is a large pistol with a 12-inch long barrel in a “manstopping” .67 caliber, perfectly able in a military setting, but it may have also been in the hands of a private citizen. This example is likely Italian and is typical of Brescian firearms of this period including the engraved hardware, to include the (missing) side plate and the pommel cap. Though likely made in Brescia, this pistol may have been sold in many places throughout Europe as Brescia was an ancient firearms-making center and remains so today. The snaphaunce is one of the earlier forms of flint and steel ignition and was introduced in the mid-16th century. It remained in use in Northern Italy into the mid-18th century giving it a particularly long period of use. Ornate pistols such as this remain comparably hard to find and very desirable. This pistol appears to be from the earlier portion of the snaphaunce’s period of use and was almost certainly made in or near Brescia in Northern Italy as it has the metalwork the region’s pistols are known for. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is functional. The bore is dark and smooth. The stock has been rejoined at the pommel. The decorative sideplate is absent from the left side. This one has a “1605” date marking on it that looks more recent than the gun’s manufacture. Own the original!
