Early-1800s BRITISH Self Defense Pocket/Muff Pistol

Here we present an antique Lightly Engraved Folding Trigger Sykes Boxlock Flintlock Pistol with a Snap Bayonet, made circa the early 1800s in Oxford, England. This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of Europe during the mid-1800s. This pistol is small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 16th-18th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff. This little jewel was extra special, because once one had expended their single shot, they had a backup bayonet for defense!

The overall condition is fine. Bright gray patina. The action is excellent. Fully functioning spring bayonet. The bore is in good shape for its age. Solid grip. Markings are sharp. Th frame sits firmly against the grip. British proof marks are present on the underside of the frame.
