Contract Of 1734 First Model French Flintlock Naval Pistol Dumares & Blachon
Description: This is an 18th century French naval pistol. If you search "1690-1790, 100 years of French naval pistols" you'll find an 8-page paper. It explains that the French navy armed with cavalry pistols until the M1733 dragoon was introduced. The admiralty decided they wanted their own model. A contract was signed with entrepreneurs Duchamps & Blachon in 1734. The paper also mentions 2 examples believed to be from a subcontract with locks signed Dumares over Blachon. This is a 3rd example from that subcontract. Lock, barrel & furniture are iron. Lock functions perfectly with very strong springs. Holds cock in both positions. Fizen snaps open & shut with a tight seal. Lock center is marked "DUMARES over BLACHON". There is also a small fur-de-lis & the letter B. I've owned this pistol since 2014 and have fired it several times. The pistol was shortened at some point & a barrel band was added. Side plate has an extra hole where a belt hook was once attached. This pistol was an American revolutionary war bring back. I bought it from a gun store owner in Connecticut. He bought it from the family who's ancestor served in the Connecticut state navy during the war. This pistol hung on the wall of their family home for over 100 years. I wish I had more of the history. But the family didn't want to share their name. 14" long overall. 8 3/8" octagon to round 64 caliber smooth bore iron barrel.
