Here we present an antique John Twigg Flintlock Pistol, made circa the 1760s in London, England. This pistol was made by the British gunmaker John Fox Twigg (1732-1790). One of the finest English makers of his era, Twigg was known for his quality and attention to details. He was born in Grantham, Linconshire. He apprenticed under Edward Newton, an Irish gunmaker. Twigg was a gunmaker on his own as of 1755 at Angel Court and Charing Cross; he moved to 132 Strand, opposite Catherine Street until 1776, whereupon he moved to Piccadilly until he passed away. He briefly was in business with his nephew, John Bass, beginning in 1788. After Twigg’s death in 1790, several of his apprentices later became well-known makers, including the famous English gunmaker John Manton. 

This large bore pistol would have been from the era including both the French and Indian War (Seven Years War) and the Revolutionary War. Given its .75 caliber bore it would have been a good companion to the British Brown Bess musket that was the primary infantry weapon from about 1722 until 1838. The French and Indian War (1754–1763) was a theater of the Seven Years' War, which pitted the North American colonies of the British Empire against those of the French, each side being supported by various Native American tribes. At the start of the war, the French colonies had a population of roughly 60,000 settlers, compared with 2 million in the British colonies. The outnumbered French particularly depended on their native allies. Two years into the French and Indian War, in 1756, Great Britain declared war on France, beginning the worldwide Seven Years' War. Many view the French and Indian War as being merely the American theater of this conflict. However, in the United States the French and Indian War is viewed as a singular conflict which was not associated with any European war. French Canadians call it the ‘guerre de la Conquête’, or the “War of the Conquest”.

The overall condition is fine. Original finish and patina. The action is excellent and crisp with a functional sliding half-cock safety. The stock is in very nice condition with the fit and finish still evident after 250 years; small, short, stable split under the muzzle. Signs both of use and of care for this very large bore sidearm made for a pivotal period in World history!
