Description: RARE Antique DUMOUTHIER Double Barrel Percussion KNIFE Pistol GERMAN SILVER Liege Proofed SIDE by SIDE Pistol/Knife Combo Here we present a rare antique Dumouthier Pattern Double Barrel Percussion Knife Pistol made circa the mid-1800. This intimidating, beautiful weapon was designed by Joseph-Celestin Dumouthier in Paris in the mid-19th century. His surname is regularly seen spelled both as Dumouthier and Dumonthier in period sources and modern works. He was active from 1840 to around 1900 and is listed in period sources as originally from Houdan in northern France. Bladed pistols had, by that period, already been manufactured for multiple centuries in Europe for use as hunting sidearms used to finish off wounded boars and other game. Some of these fascinating weapons are known to have been given to world leaders, including Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, which is now in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago. The upper section of the quillions pull back revealing the nipples and serve as the hammers. The grips are an engraved pattern of German silver. Single and double-barrel knife/pistol combinations like this are fairly uncommon. Most date to the 1840s and 1850s, when a lot of people still didn’t trust the newfangled revolvers or even pepperboxes. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout with some of the original twist pattern visible on the barrels. Engraved German silver grips. The actions are functional. Both hammers have been repaired, the right hammer shows a short, stable crack. The left hammer will hold fuck cock but can be pushed out of battery with finger pressure.
