War of 1812 Era Indian Chief's Pistol by Gill (Madaus Collection)
Description: NSN, .65 Caliber, 9" barrel with a very good, lightly pitted bore. This is a handsome and very rare Indian "Chiefs Pistol" as built for the Board of Ordnance about the time of the War of 1812. The pistol has the maker's name, "Gill", on the lock and the Government proofs on the barrel. The underside of the barrel exhibits the remnants of the original armory bright finish, and stock assembler's mark. The reverse of the lock has all of the original parts, and is mechanically excellent. The pistol remains in its original flint configuration and all of the components, including the brass-tipped ramrod, remain as originally built ca. 1813. The wood at the tail of the side plate has a faint government inspector mark, "(crown)/LB". The side plate itself is a scaled down version of those used on the long "Chief's Guns" as supplied by the Board of Ordnance during the War of 1812. The tang markings are very faint, while the side plate has the typical feathers, spears, and shield motif. The butt has the scallop shell designs at the bases of the long tangs, and elementary engraving. Board of Ordnance Common Pistols occasionally appear on the market, built for distribution and gifts to the various tribes of North America, but these pieces are totally plain and devoid of any special marking other than the Board of Ordnance barrel proofs. The noted author Dr. De Witt Bailey assembled the BOA Indian Gun Production records 1813-1816; which indicates that John Gill produced a total of 2557 weapons for the Board comprised of Common Guns, Chief's Guns, Rifles, and only 128 Pistols. Unfortunately, there is no breakdown as to the number of Common Pistols vs. Chief's Pistols in the 128 pieces built by Gill. This pistol is an extremely scarce Chief's Pistol, based not only on the production records but on the few examples that have appeared on the market. Additionally, this particular pistol has been examined by R.E. Brooker, the author of "British Military Pistols 1603-1888", one of the most advanced British military pistol collectors today. He advised that he had not previously encountered a Gill Chief's pistol over his extensive collecting career. The pistol itself was purchased from the Estate of Howard E. Madaus, the well known and respected military historian and museum curator. The pistol was given to him as a young man in Milwaukee, and was, in fact, the very first firearm he ever owned. Included with the pistol is a letter by noted historian and author, Herbert G. Houze confirming the above provenance. This is a very nice British-built pistol, and is probably the best example to appear on the market in some time. It is, simply, an uncommon pistol in uncommonly good condition. {Ref. “The Encyclopedia of Trade Goods Vol. 1 – Firearms of the Fur Trade” by James A.
