Queen Anne Flintlock Pistol with turn off barrel made by John Harman of London circa 1740 - Silver Mounted
Description: This is a museum quality Queen Anne type turn off barrel flintlock pistol made by the London gunsmith John Harman around 1740. This was made for a wealthy customer and has solid silver fittings including the sideplate, escutcheon and buttplate which is the classic grotesque mask. Bore is approximately .62. Action works perfectly and it has a sliding trigger guard safety that engages a notch in the rear of the trigger when at half-cock. Condition is simply superb both metal and wood. The butt is figured walnut. It comes with a spanner wrench which is an extremely rare item by itself. The pistol is a classic example of the Queen Anne style and has all the key features of that type. The screwbarrel allowed for breach loading of a tightly fitting ball (unlike a muzzleloader) with substantially better ballistic performance and power. These were the ultimate self defence pistols for a wealthy English gentleman of the 1700s. John Harman was apprenticed to Henry Anthonison and then to John Shaw in 1707. He became an independent gunmaker of the London Gunmaker's Company in 1714 and appointed Gunmaker to Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1729. The last reference to him was in 1760. I have had this in my collection for many years but it is time to pass on to a new caretaker. Thank you for your interest. SOLD Antique: Yes |
