French Napoleonic Flintlock Cavalry Pistol Model An 13 XIII Maubeuge 1813, Pistolet Cavalerie
Description: If you like 200 year old patina, this is an excellent choice! The pistol appears to be, as the French say, “dans son jus” with a stock that has never been refinished, brass components that have never been re-polished, and metal that has only been lightly cleaned in some areas, like on the lockplate to read the inscription. This gun was manufactured in 1813 at the Maubeuge arsenal and is still in original flintlock condition. It appears to be complete and original, although a couple screws may be replaced, but they are from the same time period. The furniture has the inspection stamp of Darcantel, including a rare original ramrod, which is usually missing or a reproduction. All of the major components are stamped “34,” indicating that this is not a gun made up from parts. Maubeuge markings are typically the lightest of all the French arsenals and this one is no exception. The date on the left barrel flat is barely visible, with just the “13” showing. On the wood the final inspection cartouche and Bouyssavy stamps are there on the left flat, but faint. On the right side of the grip there appears the faint elaborate "Double B" script, which is another Bouyssavy stamp. The quality of the wood is exceptional, especially for an enlisted service weapon. It even includes a very old French amber flint that has a nice patina to it! The action works fine, except the jaw screw on the hammer does not want to move. I hope this goes to someone who wants to keep it just the way it is. Will trade up or down for French Napoleonic weapons, especially sabers marked Klingenthal or Coulaux. SOLD Antique: Yes |
