Description: Engraved & SILVER INLAID Antique T. RICHARDS Cannon Barrel FLINTLOCK Pistol With SILVER MASK CAP and IRISH REGISTRATION Mark Here we present an antique Engraved and Silver Inlaid T. Richards Screw On “Cannon Barrel” Boxlock Flintlock Pistol, made circa late 1700s in London, England. Theophilus Richards worked in London from 1790 until 1830 and also maintained a shop in Birmingham. Known for his high quality firearms, Richards enjoyed many British Government and Military Contracts. This pistol was designed to be ideal as an "Overcoat" pistol, easily fitting in the large side pockets that were fashionable in both Military and Civilian Overcoats of the Napoleonic era of 1790 through 1815. This time period also included the French Revolution, which caused thousands of deaths, and the Napoleonic Wars, which lasted to 1815 as one of history's most deadly wars. In the cities, carrying concealed weapons became essential to combat ruffians and criminals that cruised the streets looking for victims to take advantage of. This example was manufactured circa the late 18th century and has an Irish "W-X 1168" registration mark. It also features silver wire inlays, neat engraving, and a grotesque silver mask cap.
