c1790 mfr English BRASS BARREL .58 FLINTLOCK Pistol JOHN BASS TWIGG Antique “LONDON” Late 18th Century FLINTLOCK
Description: c1790 mfr English BRASS BARREL .58 FLINTLOCK Pistol JOHN BASS TWIGG Antique “LONDON” Late 18th Century FLINTLOCK Here we present an antique John Bass English Brass Barrel Flintlock Pistol, made between 1790 and December of 1794 in London, England. John Bass was in partnership with his uncle, the renowned gunmaker, John Fox Twigg from 1788 until Twigg’s death in 1790. He traded under his own name from 1790 until his sudden death at the age off 33 in December of 1794. History of the Twigg and Bass families is available in the book Great British Gunmakers 1740-1790 by Neal & Back, pages 61 and 62. Then as now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. According to some estimates, European rifles were made at a ratio of 250:1 over pistols, making these rare and highly coveted. The overall condition is fine. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and in great shape. The stock is in fine condition. There is a small split at the left stock flat from the lock screw, where they tend to be on these larger single shots. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 6-1/8 inches. Caliber: .58 Flintlock Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
