1830's-1850's Vintage A.W. Spies N.Y. .58 Caliber London-Mfg. Flintlock Pistol w/ Brass Octagon Barrel
Description: This is a nice and attractive brass-barreled flintlock pistol made in London England and imported by A.W. Spies of New York, sometime during the mid 1830's up until the 1850's. This single-shot .58 caliber "belt pistol" was a very important weapon in that period of time, as the United States was still quite wild in multiple areas of the country and everyone had to be responsible for their own safety and the safety of their family and loved ones. This was a well-made but affordable pistol that had enough knock-down power to stop a person intent on doing harm to someone, providing they were able to hit them despite the smooth-bore and lack of sights. With percussion-fired weapons becoming more and more popular in the 1830's and 1840's, this pistol was outdated in terms of firearms tech even when new. This particular example is in good condition overall and appears to be all-original. If anything has been replaced on it, it had to have been done a long time as the patina is even across all of the components. The lock is still functional, the hammer still has both half and full-cock notches intact, and the frizzen on the flash pan still stays open or closed when manipulated. With the smoothbore barrel made of brass, there is rust or pitting on it or in the bore. The original markings are all still intact and fully legible. The original stock on this pistol is still all there, but it does show some minor dings, dents, and scratches, and there are cracks some in it. These cracks can be seen in the pictures in this listing. How old they are is anyone's guess, but it does appear that someone has glued at least the larger ones as they feel stable and won't open or close when substantial pressure is applied to them. While we definitely do NOT recommend firing this pistol with any black powder load, it does still appear to be fully functional. This handsome antique flintlock pistol would be a nice addition to any antique weapons collection, and would also make a great decorator and conversation piece for your sitting room coffee table or bookshelves. As an antique, this can be shipped to directly to the buyer's home or business with no FFL or C&R License required to do so. SOLD Antique: Yes Handgun Caliber: .58 Manufacturer: A.W.
