RARE Antique WILLIAM TRANTER PATENT Single Shot .320 Centerfire Pistol Made for Indoor Shooting!
Description: RARE Antique WILLIAM TRANTER PATENT Single Shot .320 Centerfire Pistol Made for Indoor Shooting! Here we present an antique William Tranter Patent Pistol, made circa 1880 in London, England. William Tranter (1816-1890) was a British gunmaker and gun designer famous for inventing the Tranter revolver. Tranter is best known in American firearms collecting for the revolvers that were imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. However, this is an example of his tip-down barrel, breech-loading, single shot pistol. It is chambered for his namesake .320 Tranter Centerfire Revolver cartridge, which makes this one rather scarce as they are typically seen in the rimfire format. This would have been a parlor or saloon pistol. Salon or saloon pistols came into fashion in the mid-19th century, where they typically featured heavy barrels and were chambered in a small caliber. They were used for target shooting in homes with a dedicated parlor or gallery for this purpose. Other guns of this type include “Gallery Guns”, “Flobert Guns”, “Saloon Guns”, and “Parlor Guns”, all designed for recreational indoor target shooting. These guns were developed in 1845, when French inventor Louis-Nicolas Flobert created the first rimfire metallic cartridge by modifying a percussion cap to hold a small lead bullet. These games were popular in saloons, at carnivals, and as mentioned above, in people’s homes during this period. The barrel is inscribed with the retailer’s name "WATSON & HANCOCK 308. HIGH HOLBORN-LONDON" inscribed atop the barrel. There is the caliber designation of “.320” on the bottom of the barrel. British black powder proofs. There is a curious “X3o” marking among the rest. This one features an automatic extractor when the barrel is opened. The overall condition is very good. Original blue with a gray patina. The action is excellent. The bore is good. The grips are in good shape. A great piece from one of the well-known British firearms inventors of the 19th Century! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8 inches. Caliber: .320 Tranter Centerfire Revolver Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
