VERY Scarce RIFLED BORE Henry DERINGER U.S. Model 1842 NAVY Pistol USN .54
1 of only 200 Rifled Model 1842 Pistols Accepted by the Navy
Description: VERY Scarce RIFLED BORE Henry DERINGER U.S. Model 1842 NAVY Pistol USN .54 1 of only 200 Rifled Model 1842 Pistols Accepted by the Navy Here we present an antique Henry Deringer U.S. Navy Contract Model 1842 Pistol in .54 caliber, made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deringer, widely known for his infamous pocket pistol, was contracted in 1845 by the U.S. Navy to deliver its first percussion based pistol featuring a rifled barrel, which became the Henry Deringer Model 1842 Navy. Sources vary, but it is estimated that fewer than 200 may have been produced for the Navy. This variation is the first U.S. martial pistol model to feature rifled barrels. Three variants of the Deringer lock marking are known, with the first being a small two line stamp that reads “DERINGER / PHILADEL’A”. The second variation carries the same two line marking, with a large U.S. over it, as is this example. The third variation has the same two line lock marking but is also stamped U.S.N. / 1847 in two lines, vertically, at the tail of the lock. It is believed that most of the guns produced by Deringer were never delivered to, or at least never accepted by, the Navy. In general, it is believed that the pistols with the U.S.N. marking on the tail of the lock were acquired by the Navy, and that the ones with the large U.S. were probably acquired by the Navy as well (or possibly the Army). Those with neither the U.S. nor U.S.N. markings are considered commercial guns that were sold to the general public. A very small number of existing Deringer contract guns are known today with rifled bores. It is generally believed that less than 200 of these pistols were produced, and it is likely that less than 40 of them exist today. Most of these scarce Model 1842 pistols saw service during a time of great change and increasing tension, as well as firearms innovation. The Mexican-American War (1846-1848), the numerous conflicts with Native Americans, annexing of new territory, the rising blood-pressure over slavery, and a quick 36% population increase that all culminated in the blood-letting of the American Civil War. The overall condition is fair to good. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is dark and untouched with good rifling. There is some splitting of the stock at the forefront of the lock and around the lock screw on the left side. Markings on the lock have been retraced. Front sight bead has been braised onto the muzzle. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 6 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
