ENGRAVED Antique A.W. SPIES Brass Barrel .73 MANSTOPPER Percussion Pistol
Chambered in a MANSTOPPING .73 Caliber
Description: ENGRAVED Antique A.W. SPIES Brass Barrel .73 MANSTOPPER Percussion Pistol Chambered in a MANSTOPPING .73 Caliber Here we present an antique A.W. Spies Brass Barrel Percussion Pistol, made circa the mid-1800s in London, England. Adam W. Spies was an importer and dealer in New York City, New York in the mid-19th century. He was born somewhere around 1783 and died around the middle of the Civil War in 1863. His hardware store and import business continued on until 1877. This pistol has an "A.W. SPIES" marked lock and barrel marked "LONDON" with Birmingham proofs. Naval anchor stamped on left stock flat. This pistol has a fairly large frame and a heavy brass barrel. It would have been concealable in a jacket or attached to one’s belt and used for self-defense on the streets of the United States or England. The bore is a manstopping .73 caliber. Percussion pistols were used as both military and self-defense weapons. Their effective range was much shorter than a musket and they were frequently used in combination with sword or cutlass. Then as now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Clear, good bore for its age. Stock is in very good shape with less than average wear. Some chips are missing around the butt. Markings are legible. “A.W. SPIES” is marked on the lock. Barrel marked “LONDON” with Birmingham proofs. Naval anchor stamped on left stock flat. A thin crack is present near the left side screw. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 8-1/2 inches. Caliber: .73 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
