Description: ENGRAVED & GOLD FINISHED Antique 1850s .44 Percussion SELF DEFENSE Pistol EXCELLENT Cannon Barrel BELT/MUFF/POCKET Pistol! Here we present an antique Engraved Gold Finished Percussion Boxlock Pocket Pistol, made circa the 1850s, likely in Europe. Both London and Liege have long been manufacturing centers for the world’s arms trade. This small type of pistol was very popular from the 18th and into the 19th Centuries in Europe, as well as the colonies that features a large .44 caliber bore. This is a neat old pocket pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to would be scoundrels. It was of course made primarily for self-defense, especially in cities or traveling around the countryside. This little self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London, Liege, or Paris during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s. These type pistols are small, light and simple. The “Pocket Pistol” name says it all. They were the "Saturday Night Specials" of the 16th-19th century. Before the Deringer, they were "Gentleman's" or "Muff Pistols", typically, a smaller pistol that was easily concealed. They were favored among the gentry and women because of these traits. Men would carry them concealed in a waistcoat pocket and women would hide them in a hand muff. The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in very good shape. Solid grip. Engraved frame. A liege proof is marked on the left side of the frame. A thin crack is present on the muzzle. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
