Here we present an antique British Charles J. Moore Howdah Pistol, manufactured circa the early 1840s in London, England. Charles Moore was an excellent and underappreciated London gunmaker who worked in the second quarter of the 19th century. At some point, he became one of the minority of 19th century English gunmakers who serial-numbered their work. His specialty was the pellet lock, an unusual form of early percussion ignition.

Moore began work in London in 1823 and between 1825 and 1842 he worked at 77 St. James Street. He also had two retail stores Paris, which was unusual for a London gunmaker. Moore’s royal contracts included being Furbisher to St. James’s Palace and Hampton Court in 1829 and Gunmaker-in-Ordinary to William IV in 1836. In 1843, Moore began a partnership with James Woodward, who had apprenticed with and then worked for him starting in 1827. The firm became Moore & Woodward and moved to 64 St. James’s Street.

In a day when the single shot pistol was the standard, this side-by-side percussion pistol would have been a very handy self-defense weapon to have around, having two shots to fire off instead of one! This was especially known to have been used as a Howdah pistol, named for their use while seated in the howdah of an elephant in the jungles of India as protection from tigers. This one also has a captive ramrod and fine engraving.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina: blue and case colors. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and in good condition. The stock has the original finish and remains solid. There is a stable split on the left side just behind the left hammer—it does not move when pressure is applied. This piece also has a silver escutcheon with a double family crest featuring both a swan and an eagle atop the ducal coronet of a Baron.
