John Martz artillery carbine
Description: Up for review is a very nice John Martz lugar carbine with a 12 inch barrel. Both the pistol (carbine) and its case are in mint condition. The circassian walnut stocks are quite impressive and they accentuate the beautiful deep blue color (probably charcoal bluing) of the finish on the pistol itself. All parts of this reconditioned gun have the proper markings instituted during its original construction as well as those placed by Martz himself during its reconstruction. Mr. Martz is a well known self trained gunsmith who concentrated his work on several German firearms that were used during the first and second world wars. George Lugar came up with the design of the original lugar pistol during the latter several years of the 19th century and these weapons have been distributed all over the world for over a century now. Martz passed away during the summer of 2013 and so what ever he produced will be the totality of that available during coming years. His artistic work was all done by hand and many times he worked on a pistol for several months before turning the finished product over to the individual who had specifically contracted him to do the work. As a consequence many of the guns he reworked have turned out to be one of a kind. His inovative mind allowed the development of what he described as an MSTR (martz safety toggle release) addition to the original lugar design. This technical advantage to the lugar's capability allowed for the safety on the pistol to release the toggle by simply placing the safety catch on the left side of the frame in the safe position when a loaded magazine had been put into the gun. The two things Martz called on others to do for him was the generation of proper barrels and the beautiful walnut stocks you see on most all of his pistols. These components were typically put together by Edward Korda and George Sarkisian respectively. They were obviously very good at what they did or Martz would have most likely not used their services. They say Martz sent all of his guns out after testing their accuracy personally and because I'm a stickler for that particular characteristic of any gun I tested this thing at 50 yards on one occasion using 3 shots of hand loaded ammunition. The group measured a little less than 2 inches with two bullets striking one inch to the left of midline and the third one about 1/2 inch to the right of midline. The elevation of the strikes was center target. The accuracy appeared to be exactly as Martz suggested it would be. This was done about 25 years ago when my eyes were a bit better than they are today. Hopefully my pictures will support my commentary but if not or you have questions that I will try and answer I can be reached by phone or via the G.I. site. Thanks much for taking a look.
