Colt Ace
Description: Up for your review is an extremely well kept Colt Ace pistol that rolled off the production line according to its serial numbers in 1936. So it belongs in the midrange of the 11,000 or so guns that were produced in this configuration from 1931 until 1947. I've been collecting guns for over 60 years with special interest in Colt firearms and have seen few if any of these types of pistols in this unusually fine shape. I would rate its condition as 98% or better. It remains all original with its box and papers. The box itself is a bit tattered however, strongly suggesting the age of this firearm but how it protected the pistol for its 89 year existence remains a mystery to me. Interestingly, the serial number is written in pencil on the bottom of the box but is just barely ledgible indicating that this is not a period box but rather the original. I have owned it for the majority of its life and never fired it. Just looking at its chamber and two tone original clip I would doubt it has ever been fired outside the factory testing before its sale. The bore is mint as are its wooden stocks. The bluing has a few superficial minor marks from handling over the years which can be seen in the provided pictures. This is a definate ernest collectors piece and should be in someone elses collection as I'm now getting a bit old to continue its care. These guns were produced in the pre-war era in an effort to provide a training weapon for military personel who would eventually carry and use the 1911 Colt .45 in combat. The only change in the pistol that took place of significance during its time was the floating chamber beginning in 1937 which was introduced to add recoil which was supposed to more liken it to the original .45 1911 Colt. The .38 super came along as an experimental caliber in the 1911 frame just prior to the birth of the Colt Ace and at least in part becauce of its success the Ace became a reality. Colt made an attempt to bring back the Ace in 1978 but discontinued its secondary introduction in 1982 for what ever reason. I've examined a number of these later guns and I find their production quality to be lacking when compared to the original pistols. One should always remember that the value of any firearm has more to do with its rarity and condition than what might appear in the blue book. Thanks much for taking the time to review this pistol's history and photos. If questions arise and there is further interest I'll be happy to communicate additionally via the G.I.site.
