Austaralian "Z Force" commando knuckle knife
Description: These are exceptionally rare knives specially made for the Australian “Z Force” commandos in WWII. Estimates are that less than 200 were made. Unknown how many survive. Similar to our current Navy Seals, the Z Force Commandos had the prerogative to order specially made equipment directly from the government. They are famous for being carried by deeply embedded Australian agents tasked with disrupting Japanese supply lines in the Pacific islands chain around Indonesia and Borneo. They were ordered and arrived in time to be carried on the HMS Krait raid. They were ostensibly made by Greg Steel with either brass or mazak (a kind of pot metal) grips. This one is mazak gripped and has the various government markings as shown in the photos. It is in excellent condition. Includes the properly marked original sheath. All stitching and rivets are sound. Leather is pliable. This example is attributed to Corporal Leo Spitz, who was a member of the 2/8 Australian Commando Squadron. His Australian Department of Veteran’s Affairs service record is included. There is an excellent, multi-page article in Knife World (November 2020). These knives are also displayed in many references to include Silvey WWII (pg 59), Flook British & Commonwealth Knives, pg 165, and Walters II, pg 192; among many others referenced in the KW article.
