RARE!!!! THE REAL DEAL - COLT .22-45 SERVICE MODEL CONVERSION UNIT.
The pictures say it all. This is one (1) of 2670 units made by Colt between 1938-1946. This unit contains the floating chamber designed by convict "Machine Gun" Williams and the patent sold to Colt. The floating chamber made the .22 recoil similar to the 45, most likely the reason for the interest by the U.S. Marine Corps. COLT FACTORY LETTER ON ORDER AND WILL ACCOMPANY SALE. This very rare Service Model Conversion Unit Serial number U1556 was manufactured in 1942 per the Colt Serial Number site. All serial numbers match, are clearly stamped in the correct places. The serial number falls within the range of at least 80 produced which were sold to the U S Marine Corps in 1942 but it can only be made certain with the Colt archives letter on order which has a 150 day turn around. This could also explain the box showing two serial numbers. Please see the photos. 1942 - a significant year; the year Colonel Doolittle made their daring mission after Pearl Harbor.
