Unmarked French Model 1821 Infantry Officer Sword
Description: This is a great looking sword, the basis for the US Model 1850 Foot Officer Sword, that measures 36 1/4" overall, with a 30 1/2" curved, single-edged, unadorned blade having wide single fullers. The steel has a fairly bright patina with some streaks of mild brown oxidation and old dried grease along both faces. The brass hilt has a pierced counterguard with foliate engraving, a single forward-swept quillon, and knucklebow that terminates in a Phrygian helmet pommel. The brass has an overall dull ochre patina with traces of original bright gold wash still visible on protected areas. The ridged grip retains a heavily worn leather covering with a small portion of the original braided wire wrap still present at the pommel end. The sword is housed in the original leather scabbard with brass throat, band, and chape. The brass fittings have a mottled ruddy-ochre patina, while the leather exhibits flaking and some linear crazing along the obverse, although the seam remains intact along the reverse. This is a handsome French sword, and could have been imported during the Civil War as it it did meet US Army regulations at the time. Price: $495.00 Contact Seller |
