German Model 1889 Infantry Officers Sword with Order of the Black Eagle Medallion
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 39 1/4" overall, with a 33 1/4" Damascus steel blade having long double fullers. The steel has an overall dull gray patina with a distinct Damascus pattern visible along the entire length of the blade. The ricasso has the "PDL (in sunburst) / SOLINGEN" maker’s mark of P.D. Luneschloss on the reverse, and some minor nicks along the edge. The pierced brass guard has the Prussian eagle with traces of the original gilt finish on protected areas, and a dark ochre patina on the balance. The leather grip is heavily worn, but the braided wire wrap is still intact and the "SUUM CUIQUE" ("To each his own") starburst medallion of the Prussian Order of the Black Eagle is present on the obverse of the grip. AdditionallyThe steel scabbard has a flaked black paint finish and some scattered spots of oxidation. The Order of the Black Eagle (Hoher Orden vom Schwarzen Adler) was instituted in 1701, and was the highest order of chivalry in the Kingdom of Prussia. The order had only one class, but was divided into two ranks: nobility belonging to a reigning house, and capitular knights who were high-ranking government officials or military officers. This sword is in good-near very good condition, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Price: $795.00 Contact Seller |
