Mussel Shell Pendant and Earrings
Description: Matching necklace of iridescent pink mussel shell and earrings. Featuring concave disk with an intricate bas relief carved, engraved and maroon painted geometric pattern, a pair of baroque fresh water pearls and a necklace of 42 alternating cylindrical and round irregular shaped beads. Earrings undecorated and polished shells. Carved by Knokovtee William Scott "Clenched Fist" of the Cherokee Tribe. The craftsman's hallmark is inscribed on the back of the gorget disk and accented with maroon acrylic paint, like the frontal design pattern. Several examples of Knokovtee Scott's purple mussel shell ornaments are illustrated in the publication North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment (Dubin, 1999, pg 202, illust. #380, page 205, illust. #386 page 206, illust. #387 left & right.)
