Bahn Frei Marked Turner Rifle Bayonet. Includes the original leather scabbard , but is missing the chape at the end of the scabbard. This Yataghan style blade measures 19 1/2" in length that is 1 3/4" wide at the hilt and 0.347" thick at the rear of the spine. The blade has a semi-clipped point and is single edged with a 9 3/4" false edge. The overall length of the bayonet including the 5" brass hilt is 24 1/2". The hilt has a 3 3/4" long S-shaped guard. The hilt features the iconic Turner slogan "BAHN FREI." There also appears to be an "8" engraved in the hilt. • Provenance:
• In 1811, a German man named Frederich Jahn created a gymnastic/fitness club called Turnverein. The members were called Turners which translates to gymnasts. They participated in many physical fitness activities and even rifle shooting and military drilling. After a failed revolution in Germany in 1848, approximately over 100,000 Germans migrated to the United States, including the Turners. By the start of the U.S. Civil War, there were 150 Turner societies in several states. Most of the Turners rushed to enlist and created units compromised of their own members. Many of the men arrived to the military camps with their own personal weapons. Often, the hilts of their saber bayonets were cast with slogans, primarily being "BAHN FREI," which is a German idiomatic phrase that roughly translates to "Look out" or "Get out of the way."
