19th Century British Painted Police Truncheon
Description:
This is a hardwood truncheon measuring approximately 12 1/2" with a tapered, ten-grooved handle. The body of the truncheon is decorated with a painted design on black background that incorporates linear geometric design motifs, as well as a British royal crown, and the name "RICHMOND" (we presume that this refers to the town of Richmond, now situated within Greater London, about 8 miles from Charing Cross). The paint has dulled with age and has some minor flaking and wear present, but the designs, crown, and legend are all plainly visible. The grip area has a nice patina, and exhibits some smoothing and wear from carry. This is a handsome piece of Victorian police memorabilia, and would make a great item for display.
