Sale Pending A fine and rare medal from a U.S. Air Force Colonel and B17 Pilot who enlisted in 1939 and retired in 1964. The Rare 18K Solid Gold Order of Air Merit Presentation Medal that was presented to him by Generalisimo Rafael Trujillo, also known as "El Jefe" dictator of the Dominican Republic between 1952 and 1954. The medal was awarded for Valor & Loyalty and is inscribed on the back and it has 2 hallmarks for 18K gold. The Dominican Republic Coat of Arms with Air Wings is above the main cross and hinged and is also hallmarked 18K. Beautiful enamel work over the gold makes this an outstanding work of the goldsmiths from N.S. Meyer Co, New York, NY. The gold medal weighs 15.1 grams, almost half an ounce. The U.S. Govt. at the time was involved with the Dominican Govt. in all kinds of fiascos, including trying to install Batista and deposing Castro. The medal was made by the N.S. Myer Co. of New York, NY. I cannot find one of these medals in my extensive research. I have the Air Force Colonels name and service dates. USPS Priority mail is 12.00

He flew B17's in more than 30 Combat Missions, he led more than 15 of those missions. The Colonel and his crew were shot down over Germany, managed to get back over enemy lines before crashing in Belgium. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters.
493rd Bombardment Group (Heavy) Missions
Operated chiefly against industrial and military installations in Germany, attacking an ordnance depot at Magdeburg, marshalling yards at Cologne, synthetic oil plants at Merseburg, railroad tunnel at Ahrweiler, bridges at Irlich, factories at Frankfurt and other strategic objectives. Additional operations included striking airfields, bridges and gun batteries prior to and during the Normandy Invasion June '44, hitting enemy positions to assist ground forces south of Caen and at St. Lo July '44, bombing German fortifications to cover the airborne attack on Holland Sept. 44, attacking enemy positions and communications during the Battle of the Bulge Dec. '44 to Jan. '45,and assisting the airborne assault across the Rhine Mar. '45. Flew the last Combat mission, an attack on the marshalling yards at Nauen April 20, 1945.
In May of 1945 he was one of the first U.S. Military Officers to liberate the Mauthausen POW Camp in Austria. He was sent on an official visit to China in 1948 about 18 months before the Communist takeover. He was Executive Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force and from 1950 to 1954 he headed a military advisory group in the Dominican Republic.
