World War I German Helmet dated 1917
Description:
Here is a very nice World War I German helmet with an M16 liner, dated 1917. The helmet is in excellent condition with no rust, dents, cracks, or loose or missing rivets. The exterior shell of the helmet appears to have camouflage paint applied although the color scheme is so close to the original paint inside the helmet it almost looks like it was factory applied. Whoever the soldier was who painted it did a very nice job. Applying camouflage paint to helmets by the German soldiers was a common practice and a variety of colors and patterns have been observed. During WWI the use of camouflage paint was sanctioned by the German high command. The M16 leather liner is in fair condition. The leather band and all three of the leather flaps are intact but the tie at the top of the liner is missing. The date, 1917, is clearly stamped on the band. The metal tabs that hold the band in place are all there and are in good condition. The helmet does not have a chin strap. This is good example of a WWI German helmet that will dispaly nicely by itself on in any collection.
