18th Century very ornate and unusual 14-blade/implement engraved folding knife with ivory handles
Description: 18th Century very ornate and unusual horseman's folding knife with 14-blades/implements, engraved with ivory handles. Elaborately engraved rear iron cover which hinges open to reveal a cork screw, snuff spoon, gimlet, button hook and hoof pick. On top side is a 2-5/8th inch flat bladed knife which is 9/16 inch wide, a 2-3/4 inch bow saw, 2-3/4 inch scissors, 2-1/2 inch file of which the last ½ inch is a blade (likely a finger nail file/cleaner) and 2-1/2 inch clip point knife that is 5/16 inch wide. The knife has a 3-5/16th inch bolster lining on each side which is slightly curved on one end (which is covered by the ivory handle and that end has the tooth pick and scissors inserts). The other end has a rectangular, engraved, vertical end piece ¼ inch wide by 11/16th high at which the ivory handle terminates. Recessed from handle section, the bolster liner on this end projects a further 5/16 of an inch and is 3/8th of an inch wide. This projection, which is at the top of the frame, has 5 blade/implement channels, separated by 3 brass and one iron spacers. It has a large iron pin to hold the larger blades/implements. The bottom of the knife has an elaborately floral engraved cover plate that curves around the other (rounded) end of the knife and terminates in a blunted triangular finial. This cover swivels open on a pin through the bottom of the engraved “frame” of the handle at the other end to reveal the smaller implements. The engraved “frames” curve out slightly to take the back cover swivel pin. Each side of the knife has an ivory handle made of two tightly fitted flat ivory plates, each fastened by 4 brass and one iron pins. The end of the ivory handles that meets the “frame” are scooped and rise to meet the “frame,” which continues the curving contour. At the front (curved) edge, where the ivory meets the bolster on one side is a pull out iron headed, bone or horn tooth pick and on the other side a pull out set of iron tweezers. Inset and swiveling out of the folding backstrap is a 1-1/8 inch long implement which could be a clock winder. It has a square shank and a 7/16 inch long cylindrical head with 3 decorative rings and a square hole in the end that would fit onto something like a square clock winder. Altogether the knife has 14 blades/implements. This is a very elegant gentleman’s knife with a great look. A very similar knife, but with bone one-piece handles sold at (I am pretty sure) Littlejohn’s in 2000 or 2001 for $3,500. (Most of my books and catalogues are in storage down south, so I don’t have access to it.) When I showed this knife to a friend shortly after buying it, he immediately pulled out the catalogue and showed me the other knife, which is not as finely made as this one. This knife is in excellent condition with an small age crack on one of the ivory plates at the iron pin on one side and a very small piece broken out of one of the ivory side plate at the top iron pin on the other side. Springs are good and strong; all implements fold out and lock back into place tightly. Scissors still work. The iron surfaces are a pleasing dark patina. There is no pitting. There are no markings on the knife except a very tiny mark struck into the square shank of the “clock winder,” which under magnification appears to be an arrow head or possibly a triangle. $15 shipping (Insured). I take paypal in addition to money orders and bank checks, Thanks for looking. SOLD |
