US Model 1860 Staff & Field Sword by William Read & Son
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 36 5/8" overall, and has a 29 3/4" straight, diamond cross-section blade having half-length etched panels on both sides. The blade is in excellent condition, having virtually all of the original factory polish remaining and lovely etched panels with foliate scrollwork, American eagle, and martial panoply, along with “B.S.R." in place of the “U.S." normally found on the reverse. The ricasso reverse is also maker marked: “WM. READ & SON / BOSTON / MASS". The hilt is also in excellent condition with 98-99% of the original gilt finish remaining, and an intact dark shagreen grip with braided wire wrap. The folding counterguard has typical eagle, shield, and panoply motifs. The nickel scabbard has nearly all of the original bright metal remaining, with mild freckling along its length. This is a handsome, Boston-retailed sword and is in excellent overall condition. SOLD Manufacturer: US Model: 1860 |
