East India Company Bengal Artillery Officers Sword by Landon & Morland
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 37 3/4" overall, with a 32 1/8" curved, single-edged blade having 1/2 length etched panels, and single fullers. The blade has an overall bright gray patina throughout, with some spots of thin freckling towards the tip on both sides. The etched panel on the obverse has floral scrollwork borders with a central vignette depicting winged thunderbolts and "BENGAL / ARTILLERY." The reverse has the Honourable East India Company rampant lion with radiant crown. The ricasso obverse has a maker’s mark: "LANDON / & MORLAND / 17 / JERMYN ST. / LONDON," with the proof star on the reverse. The hilt has a VR cypher in the pierced guard, and an overall dull ochre patina on the brass fittings. The shagreen grip is intact, as is the braided copper wire wrap. The sword comes with its original, brass scabbard that has been lightly cleaned to bright. There are some shallow dents along its length, and a single large dent between the lower hanger ring and drag on the reverse side. This is a fine example of an East India Company military sword, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. SOLD |
