Confederate Foot or staff Officer Sword - Tilton Armory Ga. - Rare.   This is considered a "Tilton", a product of the Tilton Armory in Tilton Ga.  The distinct factors of the sword is the solid underside of the guard, the split pommel casting, a screw at the knuckle bow terminus, and the two step pien area on the crown of the pommel.  The brass casting of the pommel is very crude and unfinished. Blade has flaws, a ricasso, and one large fuller as it should.  The blade has a stopped fuller. It is a wide single fuller with no secondary fuller.  The top of the blade is noticeably flat where the secondary fuller would be. The grip is leather wrapped and wound with single strand brass wire..   Overall  a very rare Confederate Foot Officer Sword from a maker rarely encountered.

The sword shown here is one of the rarest of known Confederate makers. Their construction is very unique. The particular things to look for in a Tilton sword are the basket shape, and a broad quillon. There are 2 versions an open basket shape guard and a closed basket guard.This one is the closed basket guard one. The Vicksburg Weekly Citizen (Vicksburg, Mississippi) of June 24, 1861, referring to a list of manufactories being set up in Confederate Georgia, states: "A musket and sword factory is being established at Tilton.”  Tilton, Georgia was in Whitfield County, halfway between Dalton and Resaca. It was established as a watering depot on the Western & Atlantic Railroad, and a small town grew up along its tracks. By 1860, Tilton boasted two gunsmiths and five blacksmiths, as well as two schoolteachers, two masons, a wheelwright, a couple of merchants, a carpenter and three ministers. One of the gunsmiths was Joseph John Martin. In 1854, Martin moved his family to Whitfield County, and then to the little town of Tilton in 1858. From their home, the Martin family served meals and rented rooms to the workers and passengers on the railroad and operated a gunsmith shop. The other gunsmith in Tilton was William Floyd Carroll. These two men were the principles in Martin, Carroll & Co. This sword is all original to include the grip material. The hilt, pommel cap, grip, wire and blade are all original and tight. The pommel cap and pinning are undisturbed.  The brass has great casting flaws with filing marks and has a nice even patina. The leather grip has a few wear spots which exposed the underlying cloth wrap, and the twisted wire is original and tight. The 30-inch straight blade is held tight with the original leather blade washer, and has an unstopped fuller and is very wavy.
