British 1856 Pattern Infantry Pioneer Sword and Scabbard Robert Mole
Description: This is a British, 1856 Pattern Infantry Pioneer Sword and Scabbard made by Robert Mole of Birmingham. The British Army’s only saw-back sword, the Pattern 1856 Infantry Pioneer’s Sword, was a versatile tool designed for pioneers—early combat engineers—within infantry battalions. The saw-back sword, with its sturdy, 22-inch blade, served not only as a weapon but as a practical tool, replacing the need for axes and handsaws. The sword featured a brass hilt with a stirrup guard and a 14-inch saw-back section, housed in a black leather scabbard with brass fittings. The blade is marked "Crown B 3" and has a silver gray patina, unsharpened with a tiny tweak at the tip. The spine is marked "Crown B 21" and "MOLE" This sword is stamped with "Sold out of Service" mark at the base of the Quillon, which at some point was cracked right at the handle but not the full way through and is very solid. The sword is in over-all very good condition. This is accompanied by an original scabbard also in very good original condition with black leather body and brass locket and chape. I can find no markings on it but the locket is missing the brass staple that holds it to the body. A scarce short Sword.; Price: $795.00 Contact Seller |
