British 1796 Pattern Officers Heavy Cavalry Saber Identified
Description: This is a handsome and imposing sword that measures 39" overall, with a 34" straight, broad blade having wide single fullers and a 9" false edge. The steel has a lightly mottled bright gray patina with mild freckling at the forte and some old sharpening marks along the edge. The hilt has a pierced steel counterguard with single forward-swept quillon, and period leather backing. The grip has a dove pommel with shagreen grip and some of the original braided wire wrap remaining. The counterguard has an etched dedication along the lower bridge: "WORN BY COL. CLEMENT HILL ROYL. H. GDS. BLUE"; and an engraved castle on the knucklebow (the heraldic crest of the Hills of Hawkstone). The sword is housed in the original steel scabbard which has some small dents along the body, as well as thin brown freckling throughout the otherwise dark gray patina. Clement Delves Hill was born in 1781, the sixth son of Baronet Sir John Hill, at Hawkstone Hall, the family seat in Shropshire. He joined the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues) as a cornet in 1805, with promotion to Lieutenant less than a year later. He was aide-de-camp to his elder brother, Lord Hill, and accompanied him to Portugal in 1807 during the Peninsular War. He remained in that post throughout the remainder of the Napoleonic Wars, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel by the time he, along with three of his brothers, fought at Waterloo. Clement was seriously wounded during the battle when a French soldier pierced his thigh with a sword, "pinioning him to the ground." He was promoted to Colonel in June of 1827, and again to Major-General in January of 1837. He transferred to India in 1841, and commanded the Mysore Division of the Madras Army under the overall command of Field Marshal George Hay, 8th Marquess of Tweeddale. He died while visiting the falls of Guersoppa on January 20, 1845 at the age of 63, and was buried at Honavar two days later. This is a fine sword, and is of identical pattern to a known Waterloo sword illustrated on pg. 128 of "Swords Of The British Army – The Regulation Patterns 1788 to 1914 Revised Edition" by Brian Robson; 1996 (that sword was carried by Capt. W.T. Drake, also of the Royal Horse Guards). This is a splendid British military sword, in fine overall condition. It was carried by a highborn and capable officer who served well during the Napoleonic Wars. It would make a wonderful addition to any collection. SOLD Manufacturer: British Model: Sword |
