Knights Templar Silver-Mounted Ceremonial Sword by M.C. Lilley & Co.
Description: This is a handsome sword that measures 35 3/8" overall, with a 28" straight, double-edged blade. The blade itself has a bright, original polish with gold washed, 2/3 length etched panels on either side, and some thin freckling near the tip. The obverse panel has an allegorical motif with several small vignettes, and the M.C. Lilley & Co. trademark panel on the ricasso. The reverse has more vignettes, as well as the name of the owner: “Joseph J. Dvorak" in the central panel. The hilt has ornate, lozenge-shaped quillons, black grip with cross, and a knight’s head pommel. This particular style was not fitted with the chain guard, and the silver finish on the furniture is mostly bright, but does have attractive, dark blue-black tarnish as well. The nickel scabbard has a bright, original polish, and the throat, middle band, and chape have the same mildly tarnished bright patina on the silver finish. The red and blue enamel inlays on the throat piece are still bright and intact. The sword comes with the original leather case (missing the handle) and has the owner’s name and lodge inked on the back: “Joseph J. Dvorak / Columbia No. 63 K.T. / Chicago, Ill." One of the closure straps is torn, and there is a fold about 3/4 of the way down. This is a very nice looking, high grade Knights Templar sword, in excellent condition.
