Early Brass Colt Bullet Mold for Model 1851 Squareback Navy Revolver
Description: This is a rather scarce and early brass bullet mold for the Colt 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver. It's in .36 Caliber with dual cavities for round and conical projectiles. It has an iron sprue cutter clearly marked "COLT'S PATENT". According "Colt Accoutrements 1834-1911" by Mr. Robin Rapley (who was a friend, a mentor, and is greatly missed by the gun collecting world), this rare mold features a rounded sprue cutter with the conical ball nearest the hinge with the conical mold cavity having a small step for a heeled bullet. Robin mentions these were finished "in the white" and would be correct for a late 1st Model and early 2nd Model Navy better known as "Squareback" Navies. Squarebacks were made from 1850-51 and are easily identified by the trigger guards pre-dating the small oval trigger guards known as the 3rd Model Navy. This mold has survived 170 years and remains in Fine Condition with a pair of nice straight handles (no bends or cracks), sharp edges, and its still nice and tight at the hinge with zero play or looseness. The brass body shows a few minor nicks and dings which is to be expected on a softer metal such as this, but the details and contours remain definitive including both cavities. This mold is still capable of producing excellent lead bullets. Colt only produced these brass molds for a short period of time as they did not hold up well switching over to cast steel. Overall, I would say it has been used sparingly compared to other brass molds I've seen over the years. If you have an early Colt Squareback Navy Revolver, this would make a great partner especially for a cased set. $11.00 Shipping via USPS Priority Mail in lower 48. Book is not included but I would highly recommend you acquire a copy if you collect Colts. I can promise it will be money well spent as I have used mine extensevily over the years to identify molds, flasks, and tools. SOLD |
